On February 18, 2011, the rain was coming down heavily around Southern California, making the streets and highways slick and dangerous for motorists. On that Friday night several car crashes occurred in Orange County and Los Angles.

A multiple-car crash occurred on the I-405 freeway in Costa Mesa around 11 p.m. Friday night. Hannah Bartle, 21, was driving her Suzuki Aerio northbound on the 405 Freeway when she was involved in a single-car crash. California Highway Patrol said that her car spun out in the wet and rainy conditions, and it is unknown how fast she was driving.

Bartle’s car sat disabled in the No. 2. Lane, just south of the Santa Ana River. An approaching Chevy Cavalier tried to swerve around the Suzuki but ended up sideswiping it. Then, a Toyota FJ Cruiser rear-ended the Suzuki.

After two cars crashed into Bartle, she sustained catastrophic injuries and was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Bartle, of Los Angles, died from her injuries around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The other drivers suffered minor cuts and injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
