Uninsured motorist insurance is a type of coverage that can be used if you are in an accident with a driver who does not have insurance. In California, it also can be used if you are in an accident with someone who is under-insured. The minimum amount of liability coverage you can have in California is $15,000. If you are in an accident with someone who only has that little of coverage, but you incur several hundred thousand dollars worth of medical bills because of injuries related to the accident, you could be left footing the bill because there is no insurance to cover those costs.
However, depending on your coverage, uninsured motorist insurance can make up the difference between the coverage from the other driver and what your expenses are. I encourage all of you to talk to your insurance agent about getting this kind of coverage. It is usually not that much more to add it to your existing policy.
