On Monday, October 11, 2010, a tragic traffic accident occurred on the 91 freeway near the Brookhurst Street exit, leaving two dead and two with major injuries. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the car accident took place around 11:30 p.m. on the westbound 91 freeway in Orange County, California.
A BMW 325 Ci was involved in an earlier one-car accident that left it sitting in the carpool lane. Unfortunately, a 2005 Nissan Murano slammed into the disabled vehicle.. This crash resulted in the tragic deaths of the driver of the BMW and one of the passengers in the Nissan Murano.
Marta Barnard, an 86-year-old woman from Long Beach, was the rear passenger in the Nissan SUV, and 25-year-old Douglas Robert McFarland of Torrance was the driver of the BMW. Police say that McFarland was found dead at the scene, and Barnard was taken by ambulance to Anaheim Regional Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
CHP did say that it appeared the Nissan was traveling fast and couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting the BMW. The SUV ended up crashing into the right side of the other car.
Authorities did not see any other vehicles that could have been involved in the earlier accident.
The front passenger and driver of the Nissan SUV both suffered severe injuries and were transported to UCI Medical Center for treatment. At the time of this article, there is no update on their current medical conditions.
