With warmer weather and longer days, people naturally start spending more time outdoors this time of year. Whether it’s riding your bike, going on hikes, heading to the beach or walking around your city, spending time outside is a lot of fun.
Here are some tips for staying safe while you enjoy the warmer weather.
Wear a Helmet
If you are going to ride a bike, be sure to wear a helmet. Most people think that if they are just going to take the bike for a short spin around the block or get on a beach cruiser, they don’t need a helmet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Head injuries from bike accidents are very common, even if you aren’t going very fast.
Know the Warning Signs for Dogs
Spending more time outside can mean interacting with more dogs. Whether you are out on a walk, or simply enjoying time on a restaurant patio, you are going to come into contact with dogs. Fortunately, most people who take their dogs in public are well behaved, but it’s important to know when a dog might hurt you. Stay away from dogs that are barking or lunging at you, even if the owner says otherwise. Additionally, if a dog seems timid or scared, don’t try to pet it or approach it. If a dog feels trapped, it can lash out to protect itself. Learn more about how we have represented victims of dog bites.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
If you are enjoying a walk or hike, be sure to stay aware of what is around you. If you are on a trail, keep an eye out for bikes who are passing you and step to the side to let them pass. If you are on the side of the road, walk towards traffic to be able to keep an eye on what the cars are doing in front of you. This will give you time to react should a car head in your direction.
Stay Safe on the Water
If you are heading out on a boat, it’s important to follow appropriate safety measures. Be sure there is a sufficient amount of lifejackets available on the boat. Additionally, drinking and driving a boat has the same risk and consequences as drinking and driving a car.
This time of year is fun and following these tips can help you enjoy every bit of it while keeping you safe.
