On June 22, 2011, an elderly woman was involved in a single-vehicle Orange County car crash that led to her death. Orange County authorities indicated that the fatal crash took place in the afternoon near Paseo de las Colinas in Laguna Niguel.

Esther Marino, of Laguna Niguel, was driving her car east on Paseo de las Colinas when she jumped a curb located at Star Drive. Her car went through a greenbelt, over a chain-link fence, down an embankment, and landed on the Metrolink train tracks below.

Orange County sheriff’s officials said that the 76-year-old woman was traveling at a high rate of speed in her Toyota Camry when her car went through the air.

The Orange County Sheriff Department’s Major Accident Reconstruction Team reported that it believes that Marino did not apply her brakes or even attempt to turn before the fatal crash.

Officials said that no one else was injured in this Laguna Niguel crash, and no trains were involved. However, trains were delayed into the afternoon.

Officials closed the freeway off-ramp from the 5 south at Avery Parkway, and sections of Avery Parkway and Camino Capistrano also were shut down for a while.

Investigators are reviewing the cause of this accident, but are not sure at this time if a medical issue played a role.

We at the Law Office of John P. Burns are saddened to hear of this tragic accident, and we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Esther Marino.
